The 37th Annual Hunger Games was a tournament that took place in the wilds above district nine in the year 37 ATT (After Treaty of Treason). The winner was 17 year old Marian Greene from district 9.

Tributes[]

The 37th Hunger Games was famous for the reappearance of the Crestwood line from district 8, with Lilia Crestwood following her older sister Perla (competitor in the 34th Hunger Games) into the arena. Lilia's alliance with Sena Abner (District 7) and Marian Greene (District 9) was so close that it was admired by residents of the Capitol and the districts alike for their camaraderie.

Victor[]

The 37th Hunger Games was won by 17 year old Marian Greene from district 9. Greene is notable as the first and only victor to identify as non-binary. Although contestants were reaped based on sex assigned at birth, once in the games, gender expression was a conversation between a contestant and their stylist. Greene won the games by teaming up with Lilia Crestwood (District 8) and Sena Abner (District 7). Their alliance was one of the most tight knit ever seen in the games, with Greene and Crestwood refusing to kill each other once they were the only ones that remained. Throughout the games, Greene fought with a sword won at the Cornucopia and killed 2 tributes, a relatively low count for a victor. Greene was portrayed in interviews as snarky but supportive, and this continued into the arena, as they acted as an older sibling for both Crestwood and Abner. After winning the Hunger Games, Greene famously punched the camera observing them in the arena, ending the footage of the 37th Hunger Games.

The Reaping[]

This reaping went relatively as expected. Plutus Chopard and Amethyst Hoseki from District 1 were expected to volunteer and did. Similarly, Orion Montgomery of District 2 volunteered, while his intended district partner Alessa Romasanta did not need to, as her name was called anyway. The only other surprising outcome of the reaping was Aero Planche (District 6) volunteering for no apparent reason. The Peacekeepers were almost forced to intervene when 12 year old Oakley Brighton (District 7) was reaped, but Brighton managed to calm his district with a promise of returning home.

The Parade[]

As was typical by the 25th Hunger Games, the parade for the 37th Hunger Games took place along the row leading to the President's mansion in the heart of the Capitol. Fans were awed to see Lilia Crestwood (District 8), draped in the same silk that adorned her sister Perla three years previous. Other notable tributes were Isaak Edison (District 5), who managed to fall from his chariot, and Cole Miners and Brooke Murphy (District 12), who were entirely naked, dusted with coal, and accessorized with headlamps.

The Interviews[]

Plutus Chopard (District 1) started the interviews off with a bang, demonstrating his prowess with a sword using a wooden dowel that Gaius Flickerman had brought onstage. As was customary at this time, all the tributes from districts 1 and 2 (With the exception of Alessa Romasanta (District 2)) were volunteers, and this was the subject of most of their interviews. The tributes from district 4 garnered a strong response, as River Avon talked tearfully of his family back home. His grandson, Finnick Odair, would later go on to win the 65th Hunger Games. Salacia Marpez (District 4) received precisely the opposite response as audiences immediately took a hatred to her and her whiny mannerisms. Other notable tributes were Sena Abner (District 7) and Angus Nighthawk (District 10), both engaging the crowd and winning their hearts, while Mercedes Herrera (District 6) answered only in one word answers, and Jace Amberthorne (District 8) was too petrified to speak at all.

The Arena[]

After his triumph with the arctic tundra of the previous year, head gamemaker, Spartoi Peloponnesus' attempt to bring it back to the classics fell slightly flat. The arena was a basic forest located in the wilds North of District 9, contained little environmental danger. The only new mutations created by the gamemakers this year were flesh-eating rats which only really ended up feasting on dead tributes and proved to be decent hunting game. Indeed, the arena was so boring to audiences that Peloponnesus had his gamemakers engineer an epic mudslide that took out two tributes.

Arena Wear[]

All the tributes were clothed entirely in black, with a black tank top and tight-fitting black pants. There were jackets strewn throughout the Cornucopia, but only a few lucky tributes obtained one. The outfits in the Arena were generally popular, as Amethyst Hoseki (District 1) and Alessa Romasanta (District 2) were both attractive and mature enough for sponsors to pine after.

The Games[]

The 37th Hunger Games were generally an unpopular year. None of the favorite tributes won and there was not enough action to appease the audience back in the Capitol. The 37th Hunger Games lasted for 11 days. Below is a summary of each day.

Day One (Bloodbath)[]

The Cornucopia this year was somewhat nonexistent in terms of structure. Instead it consisted of a large pile of black bags at the center of the tribute platforms. The thinking was that this would urge the Career tributes away from setting up camp around the Cornucopia as they had done the previous 8 years running. Alessa Romasanta (District 2) is credited with the first kill; Jace Amberthorne (District 8); but the deaths that took place at the Cornucopia happened in such quick sequence that it was hard for analysts to tell the exact order of deaths. Lumix Techey (District 3) rigged some gunpowder into a makeshift bomb that killed Basil Ramsey (District 11) on the spot and injured Miller Zea (District 9), who later died of his injuries. Pastora Coppice (District 10) and River Avon (District 4) were killed by Plutus Chopard and Amethyst Hoseki (District 1) in a show that impressed sponsors of District 1 and probably caused them later to be excessively generous. In their first of two kills in the games, Mariana Greene (District 9) slashed the throat of Vida Wattson (District 5) and Brooke Murphy (District 12) was stabbed by Salacia Marpez (District 4). Autumn Harper (District 11) and Lilia Crestwood (District 8) had the most interesting fight of the entire games. It lasted almost four minutes and only ended when Harper was struck and killed by Sena Abner's (District 7) knife. Isaak Edison (District 5) ran from the Cornucopia immediately, only to quickly reach the edge of the arena and electrocute himself on the force field. Electra Ame (District 3) almost made it out, but was struck down with an arrow from Hoseki at the tree line. There were 10 deaths in the Cornucopia of the 37th Hunger Games.

Days Two through Five[]

This is by some called the dullest stretch in the history of the Hunger Games. It resulted in the execution of head gamemaker Spartoi Peloponnesus and his subsequent replacement by Romulous Jackson. The only thing that happened in these four days were the formation of alliances. Lumix Techey (District 3), Oakley Brighton (District 7), and Aero Planche (District 6), formed an alliance and laid traps throughout the South half of the arena. Unfortunately, none of the other tributes ever ventured South of the river that divided the arena. Sena Abner (District 7), Lilia Crestwood (District 8), and Marian Greene (District 9) formed what is called by some the strongest alliance ever present in the games. They worked together and collectively lasted longer than any non-career alliance before or since. The final alliance was the traditional career alliance, comprised of Plutus Chopard and Amethyst Hoseki (District 1), Orion Montgomery and Alessa Romasanta (District 2), and Salacia Marpez (District 4), who was frequently sent to find food or scout for other tributes.

Day Six[]

Most of the footage from day six followed the alliance with Lumix Techey (District 3), Oakley Brighton (District 7), and Aero Planche (District 6), as they trekked through the southern part of the arena, setting traps in the hilly landscape. As they continued this work, Spartoi Peloponnesus authorized a massive mudslide to regain favor with the viewers in the Capitol. The mudslide successfully killed Brighton, and Planche, but failed to appease the audience and Peloponnesus was executed that night. Later that night, Alessa Romasanta (District 2) and Amethyst Hoseki (District 1) agreed to kill their district partners together. Romasanta claimed the life of Plutus Chopard (District 1), with whom she had been fighting since day one, and Hoseki killed Orion Montgomery (District 2). There were 4 deaths on day six.

Day Seven[]

The alliance consisting of Sena Abner (District 7), Lilia Crestwood (District 8), and Marian Greene (District 9), stumbled through the woods in search of more food when they ran into Cole Miners (District 12). The fight that ensued was short lived, but bloody. The alliance was able to take Miners down, but not before he injured Greene to the point that after their victory, their arm was amputated to save the rest of their body. There was 1 death on day seven.

Day Eight[]

The mutant rats, out of human flesh to feast on, stole much of the career alliance's food in the night. This resulted in both alliances spending day eight looking for new sources of food. There were no deaths on day eight.

Day Nine[]

Much of this day actually took place at night. Alessa Romasanta (District 2) and Amethyst Hoseki (District 1) spent an intimate night together, revealing their romantic feelings for each other, upsetting some viewers in the Capitol. They were quickly interrupted however by Salacia Marpez (District 4), making Hoseki less than pleased. The two began to fight, but never got to finish as Angus Nighthawk (District 10) stumbled on their campsite. Almost as soon as he stepped out of the trees, Hoseki had loosed her arrow on him and he his spear on her. Both found their mark and Nighthawk collapsed, dead. Romasanta tried desperately to save her newfound lover, but as she went to find supplies to heal Hoseki, Marpez snapped Hoseki's neck. Enraged, Romasanta stabbed Marpez in a killing so brutal that even some in the Capitol were alarmed. Romasanta refused to leave Hoseki's body for the remainder of the night, so when Sena Abner (District 7) arrived, offering a trade, her dead body ended up almost on top of Hoseki's. When morning came, Romasanta kissed her dead lover and left the camp. There were 3 deaths on day nine.

Day Ten[]

The remaining four tributes were all running low on food. As a result, Marian Greene (District 9) and Lilia Crestwood (District 8) split up to look for food. Shortly after sunrise, Alessa Romasanta (District 2) came across an injured Lumix Techey (District 3) and killed him. There was 1 death on day ten.

Day Eleven[]

In the most dramatic cinematic moment of the 37th Hunger Games, Marian Greene (District 9) awoke to the scream of their ally, Lilia Crestwood (District 8) on day eleven. They found her with Mercedes Herrera (District 6) looming over her and stabbed Herrera in the back, killing her instantly. Up to this point, Romulous Jackson had been herding the remaining tribute, Alessa Romasanta (District 2) to the center of the arena to meet Greene and Crestwood, and upon her arrival a fight ensued. Crestwood ended up shooting Romasanta through the stomach, killing her almost instantly. The only two remaining, Crestwood and Greene refused to kill each other, but stricken with guilt, Crestwood then drew Romasanta's dagger and stabbed herself, dying in Greene's arms. Marian Greene of District 9 was pronounced the winner of the 37th Hunger Games and in the most famous shot of these games, ended them by punching the camera embedded in a nearby tree.

Aftermath[]

The 37th Hunger Games were largely a flop in the Capitol. Greene proved to be a sullen and unpopular victor who spent the rest of their days alone in District 9, always refusing to properly mentor new tributes. The lack of action saw longtime head gamemaker Spartoi Peloponnesus executed and replaced with Romulous Jackson who engineered an exciting game for the 38th Hunger Games that left the 37th relatively forgotten.
