━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The Capitol Coliseum was a large amphitheatre that stood on the outskirts of the downtown area. In times before the Dark Days, it was used as a venue for circus performances, military events, and presidential inaugurations. During the period of the First Rebellion, the Coliseum closed its doors to the public for safety precautions, only to re-emerge after the defeat of the Districts as a hosting site for the First Annual Hunger Games.

Pre-Games[]

After the Reaping ceremonies, tributes board humid boxcars that transport them to the Capitol. From there, they are dumped into abandoned, muddy horse stables until they are called for the First Annual Hunger Games.

Around dusk, the fading sunlight spills in between the wooden grilled windows, lighting the stables into an auburn orange tone. Lantha (D11F) rests her weary head onto Ash’s (D11M) lap as they huddle together on a haybale for comfort. Angus (D10M) aimlessly picks the concrete off the side of a wall, while Maxine (D10F) tugs at her neatly intertwined pigtails her mother braided just before the Reaping.

In a corner of the stables, Colby (D12M) quietly sniffles to himself in hopelessness. They all share the same thought. Twenty-four enter, but only one may leave. Who that will be, is but a mystery to them and the bloodthirsty Capitol who will be tuning in tomorrow morning, too impatient to watch district children face the consequences of a reality they never intended to create.

The 1st Hunger Games[]

The tributes pile into several Peacekeeper vans the morning of the Games. Silent tears and subtle whispers are heard amongst themselves. As they approach the battered Capitol Coliseum, they down on its unnerving appearance, once a symbol of the Capitol’s grandeur and luxury, is now only useful for the bloody Hunger Games that await them. Inside, the open-air pit surrounds the epicenter of the Coliseum that was once so meticulously cared for. The dry, summer-baked dirt of July is overgrown with unwanted patches of weeds and flowers that lay to waste. Deep holes that have been dug up by district rebels during a brief occupation from the Dark Days still linger heavy.

The unlucky twenty-four are locked inside, provided only an arsenal of weapons varying from handcrafted knives, swords, spears, and the like. A countdown of ten initiates and the tributes begin to prepare for the worst fight of their lives. The sky may be cloudless, but the air is thick with a melting pot of fear, anger, and distress. Nine… Eight… Seven… Six… Five… Four… Three… Two… The timer hits one when suddenly, ear-deafening explosives go off in the stands surrounding the pit. In just seconds, the Coliseum turns into an all-out pandemonium. Blood-curdling screams can be heard in every direction. Rubble chunks of marble and granite from the arena’s former majesty come hurling at tributes.

Mairead (D4F) sprints towards an exit, banging desperately on the door for a Peacekeeper to hear her cries, but to no avail. A piece of concrete flies right into the back of her head and knocks her down. She falls forward into a nearby hole to her death.

Hadeon and Zinnia (D2) locate each other and climb onto the stands for safety when a bomb detonates right underneath Hadeon’s feet, ripping him as if he is made of paper. But he isn’t made of paper. He is made of flesh and guts. Intestines, blood, and fragments of bone explode all over Zinnia, who wretches to the ground in repugnance.

The explosives emit a foggy smoke that covers the entire Coliseum as Capitol onlookers from nearby apartments watch in shock. A biplane flies overhead to view the occurring chaos below when an unexpected missile drops from the bomb bay. Lyris (D9F) takes advantage of the ruckus and tries to grab a pitchfork to kill off tributes. Her hand races for the pole as the missile crashes down, nose-diving towards the center.

Luster (D1M) sees the incoming bomb drop and hollers for his partner, Schinaria (D1F). Dashing at her, full-speed, Luster pushes her into a bomb crater. He tries to dive in after her, his mind racing and his heart pumping only triple as fast as his running. And that is when it explodes.

The missile sends shockwaves of devastation throughout the Coliseum. Cracks begin to emerge from the walls and stands of the once state-of-the-art amphitheater, now transformed into nothing but rubble and dust. Luster is pushed back against the concrete wall of the pit, causing his head to split wide open and drops dead on impact. The multitude of weapons in the pit go flying in all directions, and the pitchfork thrusts right into Lyris’s tiny face. Blood spurts everywhere as she screams on in utter horror. The remaining tributes who barely dodged bullets to the initial bombings are wiped out completely.

"Where there is no imagination, there is no horror." - Arthur Conan Doyle

Post-Games[]

This year’s Hunger Games offered no victor.

First-responding Peacekeepers on the scene were stunned to find the entire Capitol Coliseum in dead silence. An hour into a search-and-rescue mission for tributes, a weakened and severely injured Schinaria was found under mounds of buried dirt alongside her dead district partner.

Schinaria was hauled into an ambulance to be rushed to a hospital immediately. Unbeknownst to her saviors, a VBIED had been placed underneath their vehicle, causing a massive explosion that blew up the entire truck. Schinaria and the Peacekeepers tragically did not survive the incident.

In the wake of an anti-Capitol bombing that obliterated the Coliseum, a post-war gang made up of rebellious Academy students were held responsible, arrested, and executed in front of hundreds of Capitol citizens for show. Reports say 100+ were involved in planning the operation in an attempt to halt the Games.
